Qualifications and Experience:
I have 22 years experience as a secondary school Maths teacher, teaching from Y6 through to Y13, including 10 years teaching A level Maths. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within Mathematics, from mentoring trainee teachers and NQTs, being the Numeracy Lead for the school, A Level Co-ordinator and Head of Mathematics.
I have 15 years experience of successful, face-to-face Mathematics tuition with students ranging from Y5 to mature students. Over the past 5 years, I have been tutoring Maths online. I’m finding this to be more convenient to students and equally as effective in building both their confidence and ability in Mathematics.
Online tuition has also enabled me to work with students globally in assisting them to successfully gain places at top UK schools such as Charterhouse, Wycombe Abbey and Eton Square

Bio:
As an experienced Maths teacher of over 20 years, I am looking forward to helping more students progress in their Mathematics. Whether it is working on the fundamentals of the subject or pushing towards the highest grades, I will quickly establish a friendly, patient and supportive relationship with all pupils which will aid their progression. Maths can be a challenging subject to learn, but should not be feared and I believe it is very honest in that the more time and effort you put into Maths the greater your return will be.
Away from Mathematics, my partner Deborah, our two sons and our dog Nigel (Labradoodle) keep me busy. I am interested in property development and most sports; although I think I have finally accepted that my chances of playing sports professionally have gone.
Testimonials:
Neal Starkie tutored my son for AS Maths. He was excellent. He started by ensuring my son understood the basics and then worked up from there. He really improved my sons confidence and learning habits and he achieve a B in AS Maths. Thanks Neal!

My daughter Lucy has been having maths tutoring with Neal since the beginning of the year in preparation for her GCSEs.
Maths has never come easily or naturally to her and even from primary school it has been a struggle and something she has had to constantly work at.
Despite being worried and anxious about having a tutor she agreed to this, and we made arrangements with One Stop Tutors. They were very friendly and helpful and suggested Neal as a tutor for Lucy.
From her first session Neal made her feel relaxed and comfortable, and any anxiety that she had at the start soon disappeared. Considering how much she hated the subject at the start she never complained that she had a maths session and she ended up really enjoying it - having observed some of the sessions I can say that Neal was cheerful and had great banter with Lucy, whilst making sure that they covered plenty of topics and went through all the required content, and Lucy felt comfortable enough to ask questions and say if she didn't understand something and ask for help (something I think she struggled with in a classroom environment as she didn't want to look stupid in front of her peers).
She recently sat her GCSE examinations and whilst we don't know the results until August, she felt confident and positive which is a fantastic result in itself. I cannot recommend Neal and One Stop Tutors highly enough.

We asked for Neal's help when Darcey failed her GCSE Maths. She had been put in for a resit in Nov, Neal worked with Darcey, she found him easy to work with via zoom and his tuition gave her the confidence and self belief which resulted in her passing her exam the 2nd time. We are so grateful for his help.

Neal started tutoring my son in December in preparation for his maths GCSE. He had an in depth knowledge of the curriculum and was able to focus his teaching on areas that my son found particularly difficult. My son felt much more confident going into the exam and achieved a grade 7.
If you are at all sceptical about online tuition, don’t be as it is just as good as in person tutoring but quicker and more convenient! We would not hesitate in recommending Neal.

I am a mature student and was looking for some tutoring to get me through my Functional Maths Level 2. I hadn’t been in education for a number of years and was apprehensive about my abilities. Neal was able to identify the gaps in my knowledge and sharpen my existing skills. His lessons are well planned out, challenging and he is fantastic at breaking problems down to a level that I could understand. I passed my test on the first attempt and I am now moving onto more complicated maths with Neal assisting me on a weekly basis. Great tutor who I would thoroughly recommend.

We contacted Neal in order to give our 12-year-old extra maths lessons over the summer holidays. This was to help improve her confidence as she can find the classroom environment overwhelming. Neal did a great job of settling her into the home lesson environment by talking calmly but with authority and ensuring that he helped her understand the areas she found difficult and gave praise for the things she did well.
Neal is a very experienced teacher and was always well prepared and understood how to motivate, discipline and reward our daughter as the lessons progressed. The result was that our daughter started the next academic year with an increased level of confidence and the understanding that we could call on Neal again in the future if she struggled with maths lessons at school again. We cannot recommend Neal enough.

Neal is a great tutor. He`s very organised and responsive to requests. My son rates him highly saying he`s easy to get on with and simplifies maths so that it`s not so scary. Highly recommend.

Neal started tutoring my daughter in preparation for her GCSEs. His knowledge and expertise were greatly appreciated, he listened to her needs patiently and helped build her confidence in areas where she was struggling. By the time the exams came round she felt prepared and happier about Maths, needless to say she passed with flying colours. Would highly recommend.

Neal is a fantastic Maths tutor. While in High School I didn’t get the attention I needed and was subsequently left behind. Neal helped me regain my confidence in the subject and helped me achieve not only the grade I wanted but one of the highest in my class. He was able to make learning Maths enjoyable and I used to look forward to our sessions as crazy as that sounds. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to get a better understanding of the subject. I wouldn’t have achieved what I did without his help.

My son had failed his Maths exam twice and was really struggling to get his head around it. Neal was a great help. He visited our home twice a week to help my son. With his help my son’s grades went up 3 levels and he finally passed his exam. I would highly recommend Neal.
